"A smart phone or sphone is any electronic handheld device that integrates the functionality of a mobile phone, personal digital assistant (PDA) or other information appliance. This is often achieved by adding telephone functions to an existing PDA (PDA Phone) or putting "smart" capabilities, such as PDA functions, into a mobile phone. A key feature of a smart phone is that additional native applications can be installed on the device. The applications can be developed by the manufacturer of the handheld device, by the operator or by any other third-party software developer. "Smart" functionality includes any additional interface including a QWERTY board, a touch screen, or even just secure access to company mail, such as is provided by a BlackBerry"

So how many people truly use a cellphone for any thing other than voice and text communication???
Surely i wont call them geeks, but may be about 5% of all the people who own a smart phone truly use it to its potential and push it to the limits.
Putting it simple Smart phones typically have processors running at 260Mhz to somewhere in the range of 500Mhz. YES thats true. And have RAM from 10 MB to somewhere 256 MB + Mostly an expandable slot which can be taken upto 2GB and even more (8gb internal hdd for N91). 1Mpixel to upto 5Mpixel camera, Video recording stereo sound.
MOST IMPORTANT :- An "OS" - Operating System.
Now what would you call this ???? "Multimedia computers" exactly. The cellphones are probably just about 5yrs behind from PC in terms of configuration. But again a smartphone need not compete with a laptop / PC because its a different ball game.
So now since we know what the hardware is capable of, you need a Smart User to use a smart phone. Or else its just another cell phone. My current Smartphone is N6630 my 3rd smartphone after 6600,3230 and i am addicted to it. Nowadays i find myself increasingly spending time with my smartphone reading Feeds, ebooks, browsing, listening to music while commuting and off course playing games.
Here are few things you can do with a smart phone apart from the regular word , exel , power point , pdf docs that a smart phone can open/edit.
The list of smart Apps is endless :-
Divx player, Shozu, Opera, Profimail, Widsets, SmartMovie, Google Maps, Gmail Client, Symtorrent, Symella (P2P file sharing for Gnutella), Python. Putty, Apache web server (yes that too is ported for Nokia smart phones, but havent put it to good use myself.) SpodRadio -Internet radio with more than 100 stations. It can also act as IR-remote for most of the electronic items and also as wireless webcam for your pc.
Mail:- Profimal. A complete outlook like solution for your smartphone:-
Chat:- Agile messenger:-
An interoperable im client for yahoo, msn, gtalk, etc.
Web surf:- Altough the default Nokia browser is great, Opera rocks.
File Explorer:-
Gives complete access to file system of the device.
Putty:-
Now this is insane.
Putty SSH Every now and then you find yourself needing to do some small things on your server with no Internet connection or SSH in sight. This is where Putty SSH comes to the rescue; while writing with the phone is a somewhat painful experience, this little application is very useful when you need to do small administrative things on the command-line.
Available from: http://s2putty.sourceforge.net/
Music player:- Do you still need an I-Pod (I am not sure, confused again.)
Games:- Skyforce, Asphalt, MotoGP, Chess, Pool.
So again i am confused:- "Are
smartphones really smart ?? or People who make smart use of them are Smart?"
