Update:- Yamaha YZF R1 and MT01 launched
NEW DELHI: Struggling to make a mark in the Indian two-wheeler market, Japanese bike major Yamaha is turning to its superbikes MT01 and YZF R1 to stamp its authority, with plans to launch the products as early as November this year.
The company is giving final touches to plans of rolling out its flagship sports bikes -- the 1,600cc MT01 and 1,000cc YZF R1, besides contemplating a foray into the gearless scooters segment.
"Going forward our aim is to become a dominant player in the Indian two-wheeler market by rolling out high-end or executive segment bikes. Besides, we will also offer two superbikes MT01 and YZF R1 to the Indian consumer by November this year"Yamaha Motor India Managing Director Tomotaka Ishikawa told media.
MT01 and R1 would be retailed through the company's select dealers in metropolitan cities and Yamaha is targeting sales of more than two-dozen bikes in the first few months of launch, he added.
Speaking on Yamaha's plans for the domestic market, Ishikawa said the company would not launch products in the entry-level segment and would bank primarily on the executive and high-end bikes to capture its targeted 10 per cent share in the domestic market by 2012.
"We are taking it as a challenge to build the Yamaha brand again in India and have planned several launches over the next four years. However, we are not looking at the entry-level segment anymore as it does not go with the company's image"he said.
