10000 Hero Ultra Electric bikes sold in India

The Hero Ultra a collaboration between Hero group and Ultra motors is on its way to become the country's largest electric two wheeler manufacturer. The two companies enter the join agreement in october 2006 and as a part of the deal, Ultra would provide the EV technology and kit, while Hero Cycles would manufacture the final product. With the increasing fuel prices and awareness about pollution caused by vehicles the electrically powered (battery powered) vehicles are suddenly getting lot of attention. Another big advantage that these electric bikes don't require registration or license to drive hence they are an instant hit within the 13 - 16 age group.

As a result of the aggressive retail expansion and marketing efforts, Hero Ultra has already touched the magical figure of 10,000 units of sales in mid November 07. The company aims at selling around 20,000 units by the end of March 08, thereby achieving a top-line revenue of around USD16 million.

Electric bikes (battery powered bikes) a totally new category in India, is witnessing a good growth. According to a 2006 survey conducted by AC Neilsen, the category potential of electric vehicles for 2007-08 is around 2,00,000 units and is projected to grow to 4,90,000 units in 2008-09.

Depending on what version of the electric two-wheeler is used, a single charge can last between 45kms to 70kms. The price of running an Electric Two Wheeler works out to be an unbelievable 10 paisa per km, which is the cost of charging the battery.

I'm using the velociti bike for past 3months. Purchased thinking to save petrol and pollution.

I purchased it from Gee Gee motors, Royapuram, Chennai. For registration they took more than a month saying that RTO people not accepting their papers. So the bike was with them almost one month after purchase.
I need to travel to this dealer almost 25km for the service.
In my first service they said seat is broken and welded it. Second service the welded Seat is broken again and they welded it and charged 50 bugs. Does one yr warranty not applicable to these conditions. After my second service I went to showroom to pick it. That time they said it was not charged and asked me to take it next day. Travelling 25km to the service center I got pissed off and ask them to deliver to my home. They took 2 days to deliver it.

After the delivery. Now I charged my bike and started it. The another worst experience is the bike doesn't start. Now I have to call them for the repair. Donno what will happen? If it stops in midway and doesn't start ? can't imagine.

The cost of huge like petrol bike and the use is worst when compared to it. I highly recommend not to buy these kind of bikes at early stage. No service, No Warranty, No peace :(

Other disadvantages I came to know are The battery charging time is more around 8 hrs. That means you have to wait for 8 hours before you reuse. Every day you have to charge the vehicle before you go to bed. For any reason if there is a power cut in your area then next day you can't use the vehicle.

The battery needs to be replaced every 1 yr or 300 charges, which will cost up to 8,000. this will add to your operating cost. The cost will become from 5ps to 50 ps per km.

Discarded old battery has to be recycled and also pollutes a lot. Not eco friendly.

The motor of the electric two wheeler is situated in the centre of the wheel, which is not good in the water clogged roads of Chennai. The water will damage the motor and the repair or replacement cost is very high.
