Details of new Bajaj XCD Sprint 125cc and Discover 150cc

Earlier post:- New Bikes from Bajaj in 2008

Bajaj had earlier announced that they would be launching 3 new 2 wheelers this year at the Auto Expo and so they did: the new 125cc scooter Blade, 125cc XCD DTS-i Sprint and Discover Dts-i 150cc.
But sadly no other models publicly displayed by Bajaj, so all the rumors about possible Pulsar upgrades, a new 300cc etc are still rumors for now.

Discover Dtsi 150cc

Picture of new Discover Dtsi 150cc

Bajaj seems to be strategically raising bar as far performance and displacement is concerned. The XCD Dts-si 125cc offered the features of a 150cc, performance of 125cc and yet a fuel efficiency equal to, if not better than the 100cc bikes at the same price.
With the 125cc becoming the new 100cc, the next logical step was to graduate the existing 125cc buyers towards 150cc and thats were the new Discover 150cc comes in. The pricing is not yet know but it could be anyone's guess that it would be priced competitively in same range as the other 125cc bikes by rival manufacturers. The Pulsar 150cc Dts-i would continue to be a premium and more sportier option in the 150cc segment.
Personally i expected that the Pulsar 150cc would also receive some upgrades to tackle the challenge offered by the new HH Hunk and Apache RTR, but who knows that just might happen soon.

Technical specifications of the Discover DTS-i 150:-
150cc Dts-i engine
14.1PS @ 8500r.p.m
12.3 NM @ 6500r.p.m
Digital Speedometer
New side panels and tail.
Integrated Turn indicators on the tank cowl.

XCD 125 cc DTS-i Sprint

Picture of new XCD 125 cc DTS-i Sprint

If you always felt the XCD was a no fun commuter bike, then yes may be you were right to some extent. The new XCD Sprint looks far more aggressive and sporty than the XCD Dts-si. The XCD Sprint is Bajaj Auto's answer to the 3 valve TVS Flame which so far looked good in comparison with the XCD. The new XCD Spring with its all new 4 valve DTS-i engine pumps out 12.5 ps, the best in the segment. The XCD Sprint gets a front disc brake for more control over the added power and rear Nitrox shock absorbers which should improve the ride quality to great extent. The new XCD Sprint build on XCD platform would co-exist with XCD DTS-si and cater to the people who prefer a bit more sportier 125cc without sacrificing too much fuel efficiency.

Technical specifications of the new XCD 125 cc DTS-i Sprint:-

Engine: 125cc 4 valve DTS-i
Max power: 12.5PS @ 9000r.p.m
Max torque: 10.3NM@ 6500r.p.m
Nitrox rear suspension
17-inch alloy wheels
Front Disc Brakes
Digital Speedometers
Radical led tail light
New side panels and sharp tail design
Tank cowl and new Head Lamp design

Pictures & details of Tata 1lakh ($2500) car Nano.

TATA NANO

Pictures of Tata 1 lakh car Nano
Pictures of interiors of the Tata 1 Lakh Nano

The interiors space looks pretty much decent for 4 people to travel comfortably.

The Tata Rs 1-lakh ($2500) car was launched today at the 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi by Chairman Ratan Tata. The car is name as "Nano" (already a cool name associated withe young and hip i-pod)

Mr. Tata said that the car meets all safety and emission norms and emissions are lower than 2 wheelers. The car has 21% more volume than much popular Maruti 800. Which mean the interior space is going to be really good. The car would be indeed launched at price 1 lakh ($2500)+ taxes.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony at the 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi, Mr. Ratan N. Tata said,
“I observed families riding on two-wheelers – the father driving the scooter, his young kid standing in front of him, his wife seated behind him holding a little baby. It led me to wonder whether one could conceive of a safe, affordable, all-weather form of transport for such a family. Tata Motors’ engineers and designers gave their all for about four years to realise this goal. Today, we indeed have a People’s Car, which is affordable and yet built to meet safety requirements and emission norms, to be fuel efficient and low on emissions. We are happy to present the People’s Car to India and we hope it brings the joy, pride and utility of owning a car to many families who need personal mobility.”
Specifications and features of 1 lakh ($2500) car Nano:
Stylish, comfortable
The People’s Car, designed with a family in mind, has a roomy passenger compartment with generous leg space and head room. It can comfortably seat four persons. Four doors with high seating position make ingress and egress easy.

Yet with a length of 3.1 metres, width of 1.5 metres and height of 1.6 metres, with adequate ground clearance, it can effortlessly manoeuvre on busy roads in cities as well as in rural areas. Its mono-volume design, with wheels at the corners and the powertrain at the rear, enables it to uniquely combine both space and manoeuvrability, which will set a new benchmark among small cars.

When launched, the car will be available in both standard and deluxe versions. Both versions will offer a wide range of body colours, and other accessories so that the car can be customised to an individual’s preferences.

Fuel-efficient engine
The People’s Car has a rear-wheel drive, all-aluminium, two-cylinder, 623 cc, 33 PS, multi point fuel injection petrol engine. This is the first time that a two-cylinder gasoline engine is being used in a car with single balancer shaft. The lean design strategy has helped minimise weight, which helps maximise performance per unit of energy consumed and delivers high fuel efficiency. Performance is controlled by a specially designed electronic engine management system.

Meets all safety requirements
The People’s Car’s safety performance exceeds current regulatory requirements. With an all sheet-metal body, it has a strong passenger compartment, with safety features such as crumple zones, intrusion-resistant doors, seat belts, strong seats and anchorages, and the rear tailgate glass bonded to the body. Tubeless tyres further enhance safety.

Environment-friendly
The People’s Car’s tailpipe emission performance exceeds regulatory requirements. In terms of overall pollutants, it has a lower pollution level than two-wheelers being manufactured in India today. The high fuel efficiency also ensures that the car has low carbon dioxide emissions, thereby providing the twin benefits of an affordable transportation solution with a low carbon footprint.
(For more information: www.tatapeoplescar.com )

Nano, the World's cheapest Car, is expected to be commercially launched in the second half of 2008.

The 1 lakh ($2500) car was a major concern for the environmentalists and other who raised concern about the pollution and concession caused by the car if it was wide accepted in the market. The target audience of the car is basically two wheeler buyers who would like to own a car and also second hand small car buyers. Mr Tata refuted these claims and said that the car would be least polluting and as far as congestion is concerned, something that needs to be acted upon is the infrastructure. Stopping someone from making a car that would be affordable to common people nation wide is not an answer.

The car if successful will definitely revolutionize the four wheeler segment in the country and around the world.

Reactions to the TATA NANO:-

JAGDISH KHATTAR, FORMER MANAGING DIRECTOR, MARUTI SUZUKI:

"The car is good to look at. There is a space in the market between two-wheelers and the 800 (Maruti's small car). It will be a success if they deliver what they promised. And I see no reason why they can't."

SHINZO NAKANISHI, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF MARUTI SUZUKI INDIA LTD:
"We cannot make a cheaper car. We don't know how to make a 1-lakh car unless we sacrifice something. We won't go below the 800 in our product line-up."
At the Auto Expo’s Tata booth, housewife Simmi Sahani said the vehicle looked attractive at first glimpse. Sahani, whose hotelier husband already owns two cars, said she wouldn’t mind buying the Nano for her daughter.
“She’s 16 now and learning driving. I’d like her to drive to school and later college.” But she wouldn’t want to take the vehicle out for long drives. “We’ll use the Nano for trips to the market or other places nearby, instead of a scooter.”
ANAND MAHINDRA, MANAGING DIRECTOR, MAHINDRA & MAHINDRA LTD ):

"I think it's a moment of history and I'm delighted an Indian company is leading the way."

VENU SRINIVASAN, CHAIRMAN & MANAGING DIRECTOR, TVS MOTOR CO:

"It is fantastic, outstanding engineering. It helps redefine the sector in the country. It has established new grounds."

P. SAM, GROUP HEAD, MARKETING AND SALES, YAMAHA MOTOR INDIA SALES PVT LTD:

"The 1-lakh rupee car is not going to impact our potential customers. Our customers would buy our products for the sheer joy of riding."

New Bikes from Bajaj in 2008

At the Launch of the Bajaj small car : Lite, Bajaj announced launch of Bajaj also said it will launch three two-wheelers in the executive and premium segment during 2008. The company would launch two motorcycles XCD 125 cc DTS-i Sprint and Discover 150 cc DTS-i and one scooter 125 cc Blade within this year.
Picture of Bajaj Blade.

The XCD 125 cc DTS-i Sprint is expected to be performance upgraded version of the XCD with Nitrox suspension in the rear, 17-inch alloy wheels, and Disc Brakes.

The Discover would get a bigger 150cc heart, lean, athletic, muscular styling with power packed performance. Now with the discover graduating to 150cc, I guess the Pulsar 150cc would also get another upgrade. Bajaj cant just stop one of its best sellers. In fact i expect all the Pulsar siblings to get an upgrade at the Auto Expo, something we will figure out in couple of days.

The Blade DTS-i comes in at a time when the 125cc scooter segment has registered a growth and the motorcycle sales were falling. The 125cc scooter segment has now become exiting with recent additions from Suzuki and Kinetic in form of the Access and Flyte. The Blade will have sporty styling with a powerful 125cc, 4-valve DTS-i engine, 12-inch alloy wheels, and Disc Brakes. The Blade DTS-i will have a Front Fuelling system to offer great convenience to the rider at the Petrol Pumps.

Bajaj Auto Ltd on Tuesday unveiled its 'Lite' concept car in New Delhi, two days before the launch of Tata Motors' Rs 1 lakh car at Auto Expo.
The car looks pretty much on the lines of zen Estilo.

The front bumper is huge and seems a bit out of place on the ssmall car.
The gear shift seems to have found a completely new place. The instrument console is mounted in the center like that on The Spark.
The rear is not very appealing. Interiors are very basic.
Pictures of Bajaj small car Lite

The small car will be manufactured in collaboration with Renault and Nissan but Bajaj made it clear that it will not be for Rs 1 lakh. Although the product is ready in its prototype form the production version has a target date of 2010.

The exact price and specifications are not known yet. The car is expected to be available with both diesel and petrol engines and would confirm to all the emission and safety norms. Considering the fact that Bajaj is known for having a good R&D with foucus on performance, reliability and economy, we can expect that the car will be both fuel efficient. The car is completely designed and developed by Bajaj and negotiation are on with Renault and Nissan for further technical inputs and support in the production of the car. Bajaj also expects to use their network to sell the car in overseas markets. The car will be manufactured at the Bajaj facility at Chakan.

There is no news of any innovations or any patents for the small car yet ;-) We know that Tata Motors' Rs 1 lakh car will be having quite a few patents for the technology used. In couple of days at the Auto Expo we will see how the 2 cars compare to each other.

Suzuki to launch power bikes in India.

After Yamaha who brought in their top of the like R1 and MT01 in India, looks like its Suzuki's turn to unleash their power bikes on India roads (Are the roads good enough for super bikes? No comments).
Recently Suzuki's Indian Sales Exceeded their sales in Japan,
After having stamped its dominance in the Indian car market, Suzuki Motors is adding power to its two-wheeler business and working on a new India plan. The company so far a marginal player in the two-wheeler market, is planning to assemble 400-600cc bikes in India, that could see prices of power bikes come down to Rs 4-5 lakh and make them more affordable for those who love hot wheels.
Suzuki Motorcycle India V-P Atul Gupta told TOI. The company would be sending few ot its models to Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Pune, for homologation following which the company would be importing the bikes as completely knocked down units and assembling them in India, as they attract less import duties as compared to CBU- completely build units.
Suzuki will also be launching two new bikes at Auto Expo in the 125cc - 175cc for the mass market. The company is also working on a 200cc bike for the local market reports TOI.
