J.D. Power Asia Pacific Reports:
Chevrolet Models Rank Highest in Three of Seven Vehicle Segments in Automotive Initial Quality in India.Honda City, Honda CR-V, Mahindra-Renault Logan, Maruti Swift and Toyota Innova Also Rank Highest in Their Respective Segments. The study, which serves as the industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality measured at two to six months of ownership, has been completely redesigned for 2007 to provide manufacturers with deeper insights and more actionable information to improve problem determination and drive product improvement. The redesigned IQS now examines more than 200 problem symptoms in two distinct categories—quality of design and quality of production—across eight vehicle components: vehicle exterior; driving experience; features, controls and displays; audio, entertainment and navigation; seats; heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC); vehicle interior and engine and transmission. Overall quality performance is based on both design quality and production quality problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), with lower scores indicating a lower rate of problem incidences and higher vehicle quality.

The new Chevrolet Spark leads the compact car segment with a score of 127 PP100. The Honda City and Chevrolet Aveo tie for the top rank position in the midsize segment with a score of 109 PP100 each, while the Chevrolet Optra (97 PP100) ranks highest in the premium midsize segment.

The 2007 India Initial Quality Study (IQS), now in its 11th year, is based on evaluations from nearly 6,000 owners who purchased a new vehicle between November 2006 and July 2007. 10000 Hero Ultra Electric bikes sold in India

The Hero Ultra a collaboration between Hero group and Ultra motors is on its way to become the country's largest electric two wheeler manufacturer. The two companies enter the join agreement in october 2006 and as a part of the deal, Ultra would provide the EV technology and kit, while Hero Cycles would manufacture the final product. With the increasing fuel prices and awareness about pollution caused by vehicles the electrically powered (battery powered) vehicles are suddenly getting lot of attention. Another big advantage that these electric bikes don't require registration or license to drive hence they are an instant hit within the 13 - 16 age group.

As a result of the aggressive retail expansion and marketing efforts, Hero Ultra has already touched the magical figure of 10,000 units of sales in mid November 07. The company aims at selling around 20,000 units by the end of March 08, thereby achieving a top-line revenue of around USD16 million.

Electric bikes (battery powered bikes) a totally new category in India, is witnessing a good growth. According to a 2006 survey conducted by AC Neilsen, the category potential of electric vehicles for 2007-08 is around 2,00,000 units and is projected to grow to 4,90,000 units in 2008-09.

Depending on what version of the electric two-wheeler is used, a single charge can last between 45kms to 70kms. The price of running an Electric Two Wheeler works out to be an unbelievable 10 paisa per km, which is the cost of charging the battery.

1 million mark for Tata Motors

Tata Motors today on 24th Nov, rolled out its one millionth passenger car off the Indica platform from its facility at Pune. The company commenced production in January, 1999. While it achieved the 100,000th car in March 2001, and the 500,000th car in February, 2005, the progression from the 900,000th car to the millionth car was achieved in just 7 months, Tata Motors said in a statement.
Expressing his satisfaction, Tata Motors Chairman Ratan Tata said: "The team of people involved with the journey to this milestone should feel satisfied today of having created a robust car business for the company."

Honda Civic Hybrid to hit Indian roads soon

Honda is planning to launch The Civic Hybrid in India next year. Hybrid cars, which use both a petrol engine and an electric motor, are usually more fuel-efficient and produce lower levels of emissions, making them more environmentally-friendly than the regular petrol or diesel vehicles.
The Civic Hybrid will be priced around Rs 20 lakh, compared to the Rs 12-13 lakh on road price for the petrol version. This is because of high import duties (105%) on the completely-built-up units, will push the price up. Honda is expecting some relaxations for its green car without which it would be a hard sell in India and without a promise of selling in decent numbers manufacturing car local wont be feasible too. In the US and Japan, there is a $2,000 subsidy on every hybrid car, said Honda's India boss Masahiro Takedagawa.

Any car to run on Indian roads has to get a homologation certificate from ARAI's Pune facility. The absence of standards is one of the major hurdle that Hybrid car makers are facing apart from the high import duties.

Honda will also launch Honda Jazz / Fit powered by a 1.2 litre engine specifically for the Indian market with a price expected to be around Rs 6 lakh. All new version of Honda city is also expected to take the challenge offered by the Suzuki SX4, Hyundai Verna, Chevrolet Aveo.

Tata teams up with ISRO to produce Hydrogen powered vehicles

Tata Motors and ISRO are currently working on the prototype of the world's cleanest vehicle that will run on hydrogen and leave behind nothing more than a trail of water vapour.

An agreement for the pilot project to see whether hydrogen can be used to fuel automobiles has been signed and the work started, said G Madhavan Nair, Chairman of the ISRO.

IF the prototype does well there are also plans to use Hyrogen fuel cell powered cars and buses. The proposed vehicle would use ISRO's rocket technology. It would not have any engine as it would be driven with the electricity generated from fuel cells and the only byproduct would be water.

I remember about 15 yrs ago when our High School Physics teacher first told us about Hydrogen powered vehicles. Now thats what i call technology in action.

A bit of a background on ISRO:
The prime objective of ISRO is to develop space technology and its application to various national tasks. ISRO has established two major space systems, INSAT for communication, television broadcasting and meteorological services, and Indian Remote Sensing Satellites (IRS) system for resources monitoring and management. ISRO has developed two satellite launch vehicles, PSLV and GSLV, to place INSAT and IRS satellites in the required orbits.

Tata Indica Electric and Hybrid

What is a Hybrid cars? check here
Tata Motors is planning to launch electric version of the Indica for the overseas market by 2009. It has roped in a foreign collaborator for the project and hopes to tap the environmentally conscious European market.

Car makers are betting on Europe for electric cars given the fact that climate change and environment sustainability are high on the European Union agenda. For instance, London has given tax exemption to hybrid vehicles. Countries such as Norway, Sweden and France that have surplus power are also shifting to battery-operated vehicles.

Tata Motors would be launching a ‘mild hybrid’ of Indica in 2008. The company said that electricity-run Indica would not suit the Indian scenario as the domestic market is yet to mature.

Tata confirmed that the prototype of Indica hybrid is ready. The hybrid version would have the facility to turn off the engine when it is not needed such as when the car is stopped at signals, and turned on again.

Japanese car makers such as Honda with their Civic and Toyota with their Prius have also been to introduce their hybrid cars in India. However, the lack of homologation rules in the country has been a hurdle.

Besides the passenger car, Tata Motors is also working with a US-based company on electrification of its most popular light commercial vehicle, ‘Ace’, and hybrid buses for city transport.

Discount on Platina extended till December

Earlier post: Discounts on Bajaj Platina and CD Delux.

The festive season at Bajaj is still on and so is the discount. Bajaj has extended its festive season offer of Rs 4000 discount on 100 cc bike Platina till December.

The company had slashed price of its Platina by Rs 4000 as a festive season offer pricing it at Rs 30,000. I must say that its quite a good deal.

"There has been a tremendous response from our customers on the Platina festive offer. We have extended this offer till the year end so as not to disappoint our committed customers,"
Bajaj Auto GM Marketing Amit Nandi said.

The company said demand upsurge continued after festive season with an estimated 50,000 customers waiting to buy the Platina and 20,000 numbers waiting for the newly launched 'XCD 125' DTS-Si. To meet this sustained demand the company is rapidly ramping up the production for XCD to 75,000 per month, it said adding the discount on the Platina also met with a good response resulting in a waiting period of 15 days or more at several dealerships even post the festive season.

Will both Platina and XCD doing so well, it surely seems to be a festive season for Bajaj.

Tata to patent its 1 lakh car

A little bit or background here.
Update:-
Tata might showcase the 1 lakh car at the upcoming Auto Expo 2008. The car is almost into its final stages in the manufacturing cycle, the production version wont differ much from the one that will be displayed. The Tata 1-lakh car is expected to be a Tall Boy and have design clues taken from Mercedes Smart although the car would be 5 seater and will be powered by 800cc engine.

The company's current offering:-
Tata Indica

Tata Motors is seeking a global patent for the design and technology involved in the much awaited Rs one-lakh car.

The ET reports:
Tata, which has used a number of new concepts and ideas in developing this vehicle, wants to ensure that it is fully protected against any imitation in the ultra-competitive global auto industry.

It is not clear what aspect of technology Tata Motors was trying to patent. The engine will be mounted in the rear of the car, pushing the luggage compartment or dickey to the front, a trend that is common in the international markets. The changes apparently have been made to improve its fuel efficiency and ensure that the price tag is kept to a lakh. The higher-end version will feature manual gears and frills such as air-conditioning, power windows and power steering, among others.

Weight reduction is achieved by using low-gauge steel for body panels, while the rear mounted engine will reduce power wastage during transmission. Variomatic gears also help improve fuel mileage by increasing the torque output.

Initially, the company plans to make between 250,000 to 500,000 units a year, Tata said. While the base model will cost 100,000 rupees, the company will offer two more variants at a higher price with added features.

Many major automobile makers have secured patents for their cars in the past. Ford’s Model T, Volkswagen’s Beetle and the British Motor Corp’s Mini are the most notable ones. A patent, which protects some of its innovative ideas, will help Tata Motors in its efforts to sell the car beyond the home market. Africa, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America are being considered as key markets by Bombay House, the seat of the group’s worldwide empire.

According to German auto consulting firm CSM Worldwide, the new car could help Tata Motors emerge as the country's largest manufacturer of cars and light trucks by 2013.

Analysts say that low-cost car producers are setting up base in India, and McKinsey estimates suggest it could become a global hub for small-car production the way the US is for pickups. Sources said that the one-lakh car is unlikely to be marketed in developed markets like the US which is essentially a big car market.

The company will exhibit all these products in the upcoming Auto Expo in January 2008 and subsequently launch them in domestic market.

The ET reports that HMSI head sales and marketing NK Rattan said that company will be launching a new scooter, but did not confirm its specifications. The company also has plans to launch some new motorcycles. They would showcase entire range and high technology products including a few concept two-wheelers of our parent Honda Motor Company’s at the upcoming Auto Expo.

HMSI’s currently offers 150 cc Eterno and the 100 cc Activa and Dio, which have given it a staggering 58% market share. It sold 3,65,214 scooters in the total 6,29,182 scooters sold in April-October this year. To further strengthen its position, the company is entering the 125 cc segment which will compete with Suzuki Motorcycle India’s Access and Kinetic Motor’s Flyte.

HMSI has marginal presence in motorcycle with 4% market share thanx to the Honda unicorn 150cc.
It plans to increase its range with the launch of two new bikes in the volume generating 125 -150 cc segments.

The 125cc segment scooter segment is surely getting exiting and so is the 125cc - 150cc Motorcycle segment. Bajaj xcd 125 and Hero Honda Hunk being the recent additions to it.

Hyundai i10 gets excellent reviews

Previous update:- Tech spec and comparision of Hyundai i10

I watched about couple of car and Auto shows last week and almost every show including the CNBC AutoShow, NDTV Profit Car and Bike show, Aaj Tak Chakke pe Chakka, Zee wheelocity reviewed the new car from Hyundai, the Hyundai i10. All them had really good reviews for the i10. Looks like Hyundai is about to change it all once again just the way it did with the launch of Santro with quite a few segment firsts then.
The i10 is said to be way better than its competition that is the Spark, Estilo, Wagon R, Santro and almost touching the Swift with the top end Magna version.
Pictures , images of Hyundai i10
Technical specification and comparison of the Hyundai i10 click here
Some plus points:-

  • Engine packs a lot more punch and is much refined than Santro.
  • Comfortable cruises past 140 with max going up 160 kmph.
  • Good ABS, works extremely well at tops speeds.
  • Well designed all beige interiors. Innovative place for the gear lever, freeing up a lot of space in the front.
  • Comfortable seats in front as well as back with decent leg room.
  • Dash mounted music system.
  • Air bags and Sun Roof optional.
  • Electric power steering much better than that on Santro.

Negatives:-
  • Shorter than Santro, loosing on the tall upright position.
  • Ride quality has not been significantly improved.
  • Top end magna is as expensive as a fully loaded swift
  • Rear seat uncomfortable for 3. (not as wide as getz)
  • Brake pedal bites back.

Now having heard all that i am sure i wont be able to resist myself from taking a test drive myself. So stay tuned, will update you soon.

p.s. The news is that i10 Diesel will also be made available by mid 2008.

Pulsar 220 or Karizma FI

In last couple of years we have observed a clear shift from 100cc to 125cc / 150cc bikes and 150cc to 180 to 220cc performance oriented bikes. Altough the first question a average Indian commuter asks while going for a new bike is "Average kitna hai?" (whats the fuel economy), the priority for our Desi-Biker has now changed. He expects power, performance, riding comfort, features and technology. This is surely a welcome sign and as the demand for such bike grows we will surely see world class bikes being imported or manufactured in India.

Recently i have received lots of queries like:

Hi,
I got your e-mail id from the confused programmer website.
I am about to buy a bajaj pulsar 220 in jan 2008.But some of my friends and some information on the internet suggests that a few indian bike manufacturers are taking over some european giants like ducati, triumph, etc.
Since i have a budget of around 1.5 lakhs and this is the only bike i will be using for a long time i want to make a good investment.can you pls let me know if actually any of these deals might work out and could launch a bike in 2008 in my budget. And pls let me know if my choice of going for a bajaj p220 is good or not or should i go for the new karizma f1 or others if any pls suggest.
I hope you will reply soon.
-Yours sincerely,
Ishan M.
So question usually the question is Pulsar220 vs Karizma FI and in this case we are also considering any future launches from Ducati,Triumph, KTM, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki.

Following are few points that we all can consider before making any decision:
  • Karizma Fi is not yet launched and there is no confirmed news from anywhere that it will ever be launched.
  • The Pulsar 220 Dtsi is by far the best Indian bike we have right now and much more advanced and powerful than any other bikes including Karizma R. (Keeping aside the Bullets and Kinetic Comet).
  • Bajaj was earlier in talks with Ducati and Triumph, but no updates on that.
  • Bajaj recently acquired a 17% stake in KTM. 250cc to 990cc bikes like super duke would be available in pro biking showrooms from mid next year. But these would be purely imports and imports attract a duty of 105%. Even the 250cc bike from KTM is expected to cost 2 lakh upwards.
  • Yamaha R1 which costs about 5 lakhs in the foreign market will costs 11 lakhs here. Harley Davidson has dropped its plans for India because of such high import duties. So any bike like Yamaha YZFR125 / Ninja 250 / CBR 125 will all cost 3lakhs+ in India even if imported by any of the Indian company. No company has any confirmed plans of jointly manufacturing them in India.
So Bajaj definitely have plans of manufacturing bikes 300cc to 600cc with tech from KTM and Kawasaki but i don't see anything hitting the roads in next 2 years at the very least.

Bajaj Pulsar 300cc Dts fi pictures and Technical specifications

Friends unfortunately there is no such thing as Bajaj Pulsar 300cc Dts fi. Its a Hoax and i haven't yet got any confirmation on any of the official websites or any news source. This is just a piece or art some one came up with using their photoshop skills.

Update:- No updates on Pulsar 300cc even in the Auto Expo, but good news is
Kawasaki superbikes to be available in India including Ninja 250R.

Pictures of Bajaj Pulsar 300 cc Dts fi:-
Its been about more than 6 to 7 months when i first received the picture of Bajaj Pulsar 300cc Dtsi in mail and apparently the bike was also available in 4 to 5 different colors. Now how difficult is that? And since then almost a million times i have seen it on blogs, forums and mail forwards from my friends, who were thrilled to share this breaking news with me. It was made clear on quite a few instances by the Bajaj officials that the 300+ cc segment would be built on a new platform altogether and wont be based on the Pulsar. I believe Bajaj will source some tech from Kawasaki for the high end engines or even KTM for that matter. But we will have to wait for that.
Here is the picture of Honda CB 600F Hornet (If you are thinking about the silencer being on the wrong side, sorry folks i flipped the original image to prove the point. The silencer is indeed on the right side.)
